Sausalito Ferry Riders Face Delays from Pier Repairs Sept. 10-13, 2015

Sausalito Ferries Will Be Delayed by Repair Work This Weekend

San Francisco-bound Sausalito ferry passengers on the Golden Gate Ferry should expect delays in embarking and disembarking at the Ferry Building in San Francisco on Friday through Sunday of this week, September 10-13. Blue and Gold Fleet ferry riders will not be affected.

Work was already planned in the inner berth area at the San Francisco Terminal to retrofit and replace the cylinders of the boarding ramp. This afternoon the ramp began to fail and they initiated the repairs immediately, 24 hours earlier than planned.

Golden Gate Ferry tells us that passengers should be ready for delays (potentially chain reacting from one sailing to the next due to delays from clearing the pier) on all trips during this three-day period, starting Thursday night Sept. 10.

Note: We are mid-stream in a major re-design of OurSausalito.com. Please excuse the dust! Or pixels. Or whatever is left lying around when you tear apart a website that serves a million pages a year and then put it back together again. Thanks!

One Southbound Weekend Route 70 Trip Dropped by Golden Gate Transit

Sausalito Loses One Weekend Southbound Golden Gate Transit Bus

Each quarter Golden Gate Transit adjusts their bus schedules, adding or subtracting service here and there and making small changes in times.

The September 13, 2015 schedule changes cut one weekend southbound trip for Route 70, the bus that leaves the Central San Rafael hub at 2:45 PM and would reach the Marin City hub at 2:58 and the Spencer Ave. Bus Stop at 3:05 PM. This will create a 30-minute gap between buses at that one mid-afternoon time where previously there was a 15-minute gap on weekends.

We saw no other changes planned that affect Sausalito or Marin City. More information on bus stops, routes and schedules in Sausalito are at our Sausalito Bus Service page.

Sausalito Police: Epidemic of Car Break-Ins has Spread to Sausalito

$

Sausalito Police have circulated a warning to visitors and residents that San Francisco’s epidemic of car break-ins has now spread to Sausalito,

In the three weeks since October 25, 2015, there have been 30 reports of vehicle related crimes, such as stolen vehicles, car burglaries, and thefts from vehicles. The crimes have taken place all over the city, rather than being concentrated in certain areas as has been the case in San Francisco. Most thefts are taking place at night and early mornings.

Both locked and unlocked vehicles have been burglarized, most often involving the theft of items that are left in plain sight from outside the vehicle and that are small enough to be taken quickly, such as purses, briefcases, laptops, ipads, phones etc.

The theft epidemic in San Francisco started when State laws were changed in 2014 to make the theft of less than $1,000 in goods without violence against a person  a misdemeanor instead of a felony to help ease jail overcrowding. This change made it profitable for thieves even when they are caught occasionally, and bypassed the teeth of the “three strikes” laws. The typical case there is a family or business person flying into SFO, going to lunch or dinner in the City before checking in to their hotel, and returning to find their rental car windows broken and their briefcase and suitcases gone. SFPD says that the theft rings typically can empty a car in 45 seconds.

In Sausalito, where we have far lower crime rates, we have historically had far fewer such car break-ins, though they do happen regularly. Sausalito PD reminded residents and visitors that these are usually crimes of opportunity when a thief notices the valuable items in plain sight. They advise that the risk can be drastically reduced if we:

  • Take all valuables out of our vehicles, or at least place them in the trunk and out of sight. On many SUV’s there is no trunk and items in the rear storage area are also at risk.
  • Always lock car doors when leaving the vehicle, even for just a few minutes.
  • Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, and if you leave a crack on hot days make it a narrow one.

The Sausalito Police Department asks that you please report any suspicious activity, people, or vehicles in your neighborhoods. They would much rather investigate a call that turns out to not represent a risk than have residents hesitate to call and miss the chance to catch the thieves who have started specializing in breaking the windows of vehicles in Sausalito.

If you are the victim of a theft you’ll also need the police report for your insurance company. When a moving company van damaged my car in our office parking lot the Sausalito officer who came over was very considerate and responsive.

You can call the Sausalito Police Department at 415-289-4170, or dial 911 to report emergencies and crimes in progress.

Access to Sausalito’s Rodeo Ave. Ramp to 101 Blocked Off-and-On by Construction Trucks

Access from the Northbound Highway 101 on-ramp and off-ramp at Rodeo Ave. in Sausalito is being blocked intermittently by construction trucks from the Bridgeway project at the north end of town.

Rodeo itself is not blocked, but Woodward Ave. just south of where it meets with Rodeo is being used as a staging area by the 16-wheelers, so access from Spring St. and Easterby St. to Rodeo in each direction is cut off periodically.

Tip: Use Nevada St. to get down to Bridgeway from Rodeo Ave. or to access the Rodeo Ave. on-ramp to bypass the big trucks, since that’s the access route to Rodeo Ave. that is not affected by the truck staging on Woodward.

If you do encounter these trucks, be careful: I pulled up to the blocked area behind another car, and a 16-wheeler deliberately backed up right at him to force him to turn out of the way.

Tues.-Weds. Rains, King Tides through Thanksgiving Create Flood Threat in Sausalito

Flooded Med

If you’re in one of the low-lying parts of Sausalito (and your home doesn’t float) we wanted to pass along an alert we received from the County.

This particular storm is not a big one but will generate moderate levels of rain at its height. It’s taking place on the same two days, November 24-25, when we will be getting King Tides this fall, especially high tides that break the normal patterns.  This combination often creates significant flooding along the Sausalito waterfront, especially along Liberty Ship Way, Marinship Way, Gate 5 Road (shown in the photo above after a storm a few years ago), Gate 6 and Gate 6 1/2 Road, and in the Manzanita Park and Ride just across the Mill Valley border. The bike and walking trail between Sausalito and Mill Valley is also flooded.

Update: Despite all the warnings we saw a high-end BMW parked on Gate 5 Road near Harbor St. in Sausalito late Wednesday morning where it looked like the water reached into the engine compartment. Please be careful out there!

Parked cars have been totaled at Gate 6 1/2 road and Manzanita when water went as high as their hoods. Local officials often post signs in hazardous areas (and the Manzanita Lot is usually cordoned off for King Tides) but they can’t cover everywhere.

Insiders Tip: Driving through fresh water puddles that are not too deep does not hurt your car. But driving through the same depth of salt water puddle during or after a high tide gets salt and other nasties into the underside of your car, which can in particular attack your electronics system as well as triggering rust. I knew one woman whose BMW took over $3,000 to repair from the effects of one such encounter. Be careful out there!

In the Google Map below we used the Directions feature to show some of the areas most vulnerable to flooding, but there are other vulnerable places in town as well.

Raw Sewage Overflow Signs Appear Along Bay in Sausalito

Sewer Med

This sign certainly caught our attention this morning here in Sausalito. Apparently this latest rain triggered some kind of sewer overflow or malfunction in the Sausalito sewer treatment system, which may have been worsened by the simultaneous king tides.

As locals know, the system is old and, although it is going through a steady series of upgrades, repairs and improvements, these problems continue to happen each winter.
