Muir Woods Shuttle Kickoff Delayed to at Least May 1 by Highway 1 Closure

$

Marin Transit has announced that the Muir Woods Shuttle service, which normally begins in mid-March of each year, will be delayed for at least another four weeks. The cause of the delay is the continuing closure of Highway 1 between Muir Woods and Muir Beach.

CalTrans now predicts that Highway 1 will re-open somewhere around May 1 of this year after repairs to damage done by this year’s winter storms. You can track the projected opening date on the California State Department of Transportation map.

We’ll pass along any further updates as we receive them.

Ferry

There will be no Golden Gate Ferry service between Sausalito and the Ferry Building in San Francisco on the morning of April 14, 2017. Sailings are suspended due to emergency repairs to the gangway at the Sausalito Ferry pier. Golden Gate Ferry sailings from Sausalito to the Ferry Building will start up at 1:55 PM on Friday.

Here are your options (apart from driving) for working around the problem:

.
Take the Blue and Gold Fleet Sausalito Ferry to Pier 39/41
near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, then use Muni or a rideshare to get to your destination. Here’s our schedules page.

Take a Golden Gate Transit Bus from Sausalito to San Francisco. They have added emergency bus service at 7:10 AM and 8:20 AM from the Bay St. & Bridgeway bus stop next to the “Ice House” Sausalito History & Visitor Center. The rest of the Golden Gate Transit bus schedule will operate normally.

Take a Golden Gate Ferry from Tiburon to the Ferry Building. We have the schedules here.

Take a Golden Gate Ferry from Larkspur to the Ferry Building. We have the schedules here.

.
Take a rideshare to San Francisco.
On off-peak hours downtown Sausalito to the Ferry Building on my Uber rides has been about $33, and I’d add about $10 for busy times.

Take a deep breath and work from home. Depending on your boss, your results may vary!

Be careful out there, my friends!

.
If our posts and reference pages are helpful to you we’d be very grateful for a “Like” for the OurSausalito.com page on Facebook, since this gives us priority over stories like, “Woman sets new record for lint removal!”

Flynn Creek Circus Sausalito

A New Kind of Circus Comes to Sausalito for 2017

Update: Did you miss Flynn Creek Circus in Sausalito? You can still catch them in Calistoga (July 20-23), Windsor (July 27-30) or Rohnert Park (August 23-27). Click here for tickets.
Dates and Times:
Thursday July 13, 2017 — 7:00 PM
Friday July 14, 2017 — 7:00 PM
Saturday July 15, 2017 —  3:00 PM  and 7:00 PM
Sunday July 16, 2017 —  1:00 PM and 4:00 PM
Location:  Marinship Park, Sausalito CA 94965  (See map below)  — The same location as the Sausalito Art Festival.

The disappearance of circuses with elephants, lions and tigers (due to issues of animal cruelty) has opened the door for the return of the circuses that were popular in Europe before the time of P.T. Barnum. These centuries-old performances grew out of classic traditions like the Italian Commedia dell’arte, which mixed comedic theatre, improvisation and gymnastics.

.
If that sounds interesting then you’re in for a treat, because the Flynn Creek Circus is bringing a new kind of all-human big-top theater to Sausalito’s Marinship Park, home of the annual Sausalito Art Festival.
They offer traditional European-style tightrope walkers, aerialists, jugglers and acrobats, along with very modern comedy. We’re proud that Flynn Creek, which is home-grown just north of us in Mendocino County, has become a sponsor of OurSausalito.com.

Featuring an international cast of performers, Flynn Creek Circus calls its style ‘Inter-Active,’ fusing comedy, improvisation and amazing athletic and gymnastic skills to create a completely new kind of circus-theater. Every performance is different, taking on a unique identity as audience choices inspire the cast to execute impressive (and often ridiculous) stunts appropriate for all ages.

.
Critic Judy Spinelli of Spectacle Magazine wrote, “Flynn Creek displays a tantalizing instinct for balancing a show to include just the right amount of classical elements to please purists, while including original experiments that are a hallmark of the contemporary circus scene.” It’s an exciting recipe for audience fun.

Opening Night tickets are being offered at a discounted price until the start of the first show, and can be purchased in advance at their website. Opening night tickets are $20 for adults, $11 for children, with no front row VIP section.

VIP front row seating for Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances is priced at $50 per person, and includes complimentary popcorn or cotton candy, drink and souvenir program. Flynn Creek tells us that these seats often sell out early.

Advance tickets for Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances are priced at:

$27 for adults ($32 at the door)

$12 for children ($15 at the door)

$20 for Seniors, Students and Veterans ($25 at the door)

$50 for VIP Front Row (with free goodies and souvenir program)

Golden Gate Bridge Northbound to Close Sunday, July 23 6-9 AM

View from the Round House Cafe

The Golden Gate Bridge District has shared with us that all northbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge will be closed from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM on Sunday morning, July 23, 2017 to accommodate the 15,000 runners for the San Francisco Marathon.

.
Passenger cars, shuttle buses, taxis etc. will not be able to use the Bridge northbound, and will need to take the Bay Bridge and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge to reach Marin County.

Golden Gate Transit buses will still run but travel under CHP escort. The northbound Golden Gate Transit bus stop at the Bridge Toll Plaza will not be used from 1:30 AM and 11:00 AM on Sunday. The closest alternate stop in San Francisco is at the intersection of Richardson Ave. and Francisco St., which is 2 miles from the Toll Plaza. (See map below.)

.
The southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge will be open to cars as usual, and the sidewalks will operate under the usual rules for bicycles and for pedestrians.

Traditionally only two lanes of traffic on the Bridge were closed for the Marathon, but in light of vehicles being used as weapons in civilian attacks in France, Germany, Sweden and the UK, San Francisco elected to close the northbound lanes completely this year on a trial basis.

Report: Coyote has Killed Cats in Sausalito Hills

$

We have seen reports of at least two house cats being killed by a coyote in the hills of Sausalito since July 21. Residents are sharing advice to keep cats inside whenever possible. Please share this information with friends and neighbors.

.
A coyote’s range could easily include all of the hillside neighborhoods of Sausalito, so this should be considered an alert for everyone rather than just one neighborhood. Since we are adjacent to the GGNRA there are likely to be multiple coyotes that travel into Sausalito.

The most recent report was on Cazneau Ave. above Caledonia St. (see map below — flag is for the street, not for the location of the incident).

.
We lived on Cazneau at one point (not far from the flag on the map below) and I can certify that the steep terrain there makes it easier for coyotes to escape attention. The same, however, can be said of most Sausalito hillsides.

The Sausalito Art Festival has made sign-ups easy for volunteers this year, with an online system that lets you choose where and when you’d like to serve. If you are part of an organized group that has its own booth, your group organizer will give you a password you can enter at the top of the page, which will then add the selected booth to your choices.

The non spiritual awards for volunteering (since the spiritual ones are more individual!) are:

— You get in for free on the day you work

— A 2017 Sausalito Art Festival commemorative T-Shirt

— You’re invited to the Volunteer Appreciation Party

The requirements:

— You have to be at least 16 years old (21 if you’re in a booth that serves alcohol)

— You can’t wear open-toed shoes (“Why?” you may ask.)

— You have to attend an orientation meeting for volunteers, either Thursday, August 24th at 6:00 PM or Saturday August 26th at 6:00 PM. Both meetings will be at the Bay Model.

At least two of our family members will be volunteering, and we look forward to seeing you there!

Ask Annie: How the Heck Do You Spell Saucalito… I Mean Sausilito… er, Sausalito?

(Ask Annie is a periodic feature sharing questions we get from readers. Names have been changed to protect the curious.)

.
Dear Annie:
I did a Google search on Sausalito but I misspelled it by accident and pages with other spellings like Saucalito came up. Are there other correct spellings, or was the spelling changed?
— Orthographist in Orange County

—–

Dear Orthogo… Dear Orange County Reader,

It’s true that a lot of people have trouble spelling Sausalito!

.
The original spelling of Sausalito was the Spanish Saucelito, which means “little willow tree.” Willows in what we now call Old Town attracted the early sailing ships in San Francisco Bay, since their location signaled a supply of fresh water. In the 1820’s those willows gave us the first spelling for our town, and Saucelito was still reflected in the proposed map shown above for Old Town in 1873.

In the late 1800’s both the Saucelito and Sausalito spellings were used, but this created confusion in the sorting of the U.S. Mail. Zip Codes that would sort out such things weren’t invented until 1963.

.
As a result, in 1888 the U.S. Postal Service declared that it would use Sausalito as the official spelling, since in English it better reflected the pronunciation of the Spanish word.

By the way, when you look at the proposed map from the land developers of 1873 you may notice something funny. Today the closest street to the water in this area is 2nd St., but they show Water St. and Front St. even closer to the Bay.

Look more closely and you’ll see that they draw the coastline correctly, but then plot streets in the water! This reflects the historical tendency to simply fill in San Francisco Bay in order to create (valuable) new land.

Sometimes these subdivision maps could also be used as a maneuver. Developers would sell someone waterfront property, then reveal that the buyer could not moor boats there because someone else owned the adjacent underwater land. Of course, you could always buy that underwater land for a reasonable price!

So, to give you a simple answer, Saucelito and Sausalito are the only two official spellings of Sausalito we have ever had. Saucalito and Sausilito and other variants are, well, they’re very creative spellings!.

Thanks for asking! (And thanks to the Sausalito Historical Society for preserving these stories!)

The Bay Model Wants You!!!

Wednesday, August 9th.  10am–11am

The Bay Model Visitor Center needs volunteers just like you!  Join one of Sausalito’s best known attractions and help in the bookstore, greet visitors, lead tours, help out with school groups, and more.  You’ll get to be a part of one of the largest working hydraulic models in existence!  Attend the orientation on Aug 9th, or contact Park Ranger, Joanne Jarvis, at 415.289.3027 or joanne.jarvis@usace.army.mil for more information.

Alert: Sausalito-Marin City Exit on 101 Traffic Jam (Construction)

As of 2:30 PM on Monday, August 7 try to avoid the Sausalito-Marin City Exit on 101 in either direction, especially southbound. Road construction crews have closed two lanes of Donahue St. (See map below, where traffic conditions will update automatically thanks to Google.) The northbound exit is slow but much less impacted.

.
Traffic is backed up onto southbound Highway 101. Coming back from lunch I used the Spencer Ave. exit instead of Donahue St. to come into Sausalito. If you go to the Target Marin City shopping center you will also be embroiled in the jam and be stuck for quite a while before you break free on Bridgeway.

The road work on Donahue St. had previously been done at night, but today they have blocked lanes off mid-day and it’s a mess that’s getting worse as the afternoon goes on. The original press release said that no daytime ramp closures would take place, but conveniently omitted daytime closure of Donahue St., which then backed up onto the southbound offramp and Highway 101.

.
Update: I can barely make out the backup on 101 on this webcam as of this update (3:30 PM Monday). You can find more Sausalito webcams here.

Marin City Traffic Improved Today… unless You’re Going to SF

As we reported yesterday road construction crews closed two lanes of Donahue St. during the middle of the day for the road work that the signs have been telling us would only take place at night (See map below, where traffic conditions will update automatically thanks to Google). You can read the original press release here.

.
Traffic promptly backed up onto southbound Highway 101 at the Sausalito-Marin City exit, setting up the risk of rear-end chain reaction accidents on the freeway.

On Tuesday they closed more lanes to install road sensors, but the pattern of closures meant that southbound traffic flowing into Sausalito off the freeway was not backed up.

.
Today’s pinch point comes after you turn left off of Bridgeway to go under Highway 101 to reach the on-ramp to go to San Francisco, or to go to Marin City. When I drove through to check it out delays were running at about 3 minutes to cross a distance that normally takes 15 seconds — not enough to motivate an angry mob but not welcome if you are running late for a commitment in The City.

Ask Annie: Walking from the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito

(Ask Annie is a periodic feature sharing questions we get from readers. Names have been changed to protect the curious.)

.
Dear Annie:
What’s the best way to visit Sausalito from San Francisco? We would like to walk over the Bridge and then continue to Sausalito, but that may be too long a walk and it looks like the road is narrow.
Can we walk over the Bridge and then just catch a taxi or bus to town? Where would be the best spot to get a taxi and ask to be dropped off so we can walk back across the Bridge to San Francisco?
Finally, we have our teen children with us on this trip. Are there any great Sausalito restaurants that the whole family would enjoy. Thanks?
— Stepping Out in San Francisco

—–

Dear Stepping Out,

.
Thanks for your note! I’m going to reply with some basic answers and add links to pages on OurSausalito.com where we cover the issue in depth.

The Walk

Walking across the Golden Gate Bridge is a round trip of just over 3 miles (5 km), a little longer if you go all the way to the parking lot at each end. Each one way walk is a little over 1.5 miles (2.5 km).

.
Walking across the Bridge and then walking from there to the Sausalito ferry pier is about a 5 mile walk (8 km), including both the Bridge and the path to Sausalito. Much of the walk from the Bridge to Sausalito is downhill. Most people elect to take one of the the Sausalito Ferries back to San Francisco rather than climb the steep hill back up to the Bridge.

A few years ago new paths were opened (discussed in this article) that removed most of the narrow walking places from the Bridge-to-Sausalito walk, but there is one block as you enter the town where pedestrian care is called for.

Yes, it’s easy to grab a taxi or a ride share after walking across the Bridge. The main parking lot at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge (the Sausalito side, in Marin County) is called Vista Point. If you call Uber, Lyft or a taxi to pick you up or drop you off at Vista Point the computer or the driver will know where to find you. The smaller parking lot at the San Francisco end of the Bridge is called Strauss Plaza, and you can call for pick-up or drop-off there as well.

Golden Gate Transit buses stop near Vista Point en route north from San Francisco, but only some of the routes serve downtown Sausalito. Others serve only a freeway park and ride stop and the Marin City transit hub just north of Sausalito. Be sure to ask the bus driver if he or she is going to downtown Sausalito before you board.

The Restaurants

If you’re starving before you even walk across the Bridge and it’s not too late in the afternoon: stop at the Round House Cafe at the southern end of the Bridge. The view is incredible and they have fresh organic food, but it can be crowded and they sometimes run out of some menu items even before the lunch rush is over.

If you’re looking for a white tablecloth celebration lunch mid-way through your walk (and don’t mind a more expensive place), Murray Circle and Farley Bar are located inside the GGNRA between the Bridge and Sausalito. Some teens, however, might find these restaurants to be too formal, although sitting out on the big front porch feels more like a picnic.

If you want to eat the moment you reach the southern edge of Sausalito, you can have pizza and Italian dishes at Aurora, or one of the best deli sandwiches in town at Golden Gate Market Deli, If you go to the deli there are places to bring your sandwiches and sit and eat right at the edge of the Bay with fantastic views.

As you walk farther north you’ll be in the area of several of Sausalito’s best view restaurants. We also have charts for Sausalito’s best restaurants.

The map below shows the walk across the Golden Gate Bridge to the Sausalito Ferry. You can zoom in to see far more details. I added the Bay Area Discovery Museum to the itinerary to force Google Maps to display the best route, but it is for young kids and will not interest your teens.

In case anything strikes your fancy or interests your teens, you can also check out Fun Activities in Sausalito. I hope you have a great time!
