Golden Gate Bridge Southbound 1 Lane only Tonight, Bus Stop Closed

$

0

The Golden Gate Bridge District has announced more lane and bus stop closures for tonight (Tuesday, August 15, 2017) as part of their ongoing repaving project.

The details:

  • The roadwork will take place from 9:00 PM to 4:00 AM
  • There will be just one open southbound lane on the Bridge, and all southbound vehicles will have to pass through the toll booth at the far east side (the left side when you’re driving southbound) of the toll plaza.
  • The bus stop for southbound buses at the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza will also be closed, and the closest bus stop in San Francisco is at Richardson Avenue at Francisco Street. This isn’t necessarily a problem if you’re connecting to Muni since both are major bus stops, but if you’re walking somewhere from there it’s two miles from the toll plaza, not a hike you’d want to take on at 2:00 in the morning. (See map below.)

We have information and links for both Golden Gate Transit and Marin Transit bus service here.

Stepping the Masts 8-19-17

Event:  Stepping the Masts in The Matthew Turner

Date:  Saturday, August 19, 2017

Time:  3:00 PM to 5:00 PM

Location:  Bay Model Visitor Center, 2100 Bridgeway, Sausalito (map below)

The Matthew Turner is a traditional tall ship that is being built on the Sausalito waterfront using classic wooden boat building techniques as much as possible.  Named in honor of the historic shipbuilder, who, in the 1800’s, helped to build some 154 tall ships in Benicia.  The tall ship will serve as an educational base for children to learn everything from how to sail, the history of sailing and the Bay, and environmental elements, to teamwork and marine life.

.
As part of the final stages of construction, the “mast stepping” is the process of raising the boat’s mast.  Matthew Turner’s lower mast will stand approximately 80 feet above the water once in place, and another 20 feet will be added when the upper mast is stepped later in the year.  This ceremonial event will involve stepping the lower main and fore masts and welding into place several historic and contemporary US silver dollars, gold coins, and a talisman.  This age-old tradition in shipbuilding is thought to bring good luck and safe passage to the ship and her crew.

Viewing will be in front of the Bay Model Visitor Center, and a party will follow in the Tall Ship Tent.

For more information, or to volunteer at the event, please contact sylvia@educationaltallship

.
If you can’t make the event on Saturday, August 19th, there will be another opportunity to view the stepping of the upper main and foremasts in October.  More details to come.

Parking Lots at Golden Gate Bridge to be Closed for Demonstration Sat. August 26

$

0

The following Golden Gate Bridge facilities will be closed on Saturday, August 26 because of the planned 1st Amendment demonstrations at Crissy Field:

.
The Vista Point parking lot at the north end of the Bridge will be closed to all traffic except tour buses (so no taxis, no ride share) from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Golden Gate Bridge District has issued a strong directive asking people to avoid the area around the southern end of the Bridge on Saturday as a matter of public safety in case things get out of hand at Crissy Field. The only way to get to the area of the protests will be through the Marina, not via the area near the Bridge.

.
Golden Gate Transit buses and San Francisco Muni buses will not stop at the northbound or southbound Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza bus stops, as of 10:00 AM Saturday morning and continuing until 7:00 PM Saturday night. The next closest stops are at the intersection of Richardson & Francisco St. in San Francisco, and at Alexander Avenue and the Highway 101 in Sausalito. Both of those locations are about 2 miles from the Toll Plaza.

Unlike closures related to traffic congestion, no tour buses, taxis or ride service vehicles will be allowed into the southern parking lots until at least 7:00 PM on Saturday,

The sidewalks on the Golden Gate Bridge will be open as usual to pedestrians and bicyclists, but after you cross the Bridge you won’t be allowed to go down the hill to Crissy Field, since all of the roads in the area will be closed.

The CHP expects traffic at the Bridge to be awful (OK, for the record they said “highly congested”) all weekend due to the road closures.

Stay safe out there, my friends.

WWII in the Shadow of Mt. Tam

Saturday, September 9th.  10:00 AM – 12:30 PM

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the shipbuilding company, Marinship Corporation.  Founded in 1942, this bustling wartime shipyard built 93 cargo ships and oil tankers before closing their doors in 1945.  Join Ranger Joanne, and step back in time, to experience what day-to-day life was like for the 20,000 workers in the shipyard.  You will be taken on a 2-mile walking tour of the area surrounding the Bay Model Visitor Center, so comfortable shoes are recommended.  We advise dressing in layers because it can get cool on the waterfront; and also feel free to bring water and a snack.  In the case of rain, the event will be cancelled.

Trekking the Model

Saturday, September 9th.  1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

Join one of the Bay Model Visitor Center rangers for a guided tour of the 1.5 acre hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Delta.  Learn the history of the site and its two major operations that took place between 1942 – 2000.

California Coastal Cleanup Day

Saturday, September 16th.  9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Join California’s largest annual volunteer event at the 33rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day.  Be one of over 50,000 volunteers state-wide that will help to conserve our marine environment by removing trash and debris along more than 2,000 miles of coast and shoreline.  There are over 40 sites in Marin county, so check the Bay Model website for a volunteer opportunity near you.

The Bay Model Wants You!!!

Saturday, September 23rd.  10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

The Bay Model Visitor Center needs volunteers just like you!  Join one of Sausalito’s best known attractions and help in the bookstore, greet visitors, lead tours, help out with school groups, and more.  You’ll get to be a part of one of the largest working hydraulic models in existence!  Attend the orientation on Aug 9th, or contact Park Ranger, Joanne Jarvis, at 415.289.3027 or joanne.jarvis@usace.army.mil for more information.

John Reber, the Man with Grand Ideas

Saturday, September 23rd.  1:30 PM – 2:30 PM

The San Francisco Bay Project, also know as the Reber Plan, was designed and advocated in the late 1940’s by John Reber.  His vision was a massive civil works project that would take the mouth of the Sacramento River and channel it with locks and dams to collect fresh drinking water.  Was his plan a success?  Join Ranger Linda to find out if his goal of improving the quality of life for Bay Area residents was achieved.

Kip Evans: Mission Blue
American Cetacean Society

Tuesday, September 26th.  7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Join the Bay Model for the monthly American Cetacean Society’s presentation where they will showcase Kip Evans and the Mission Blue initiative of the Sylvia Earle Alliance (SEA).  The purpose of this initiative is to inspire a significant increase in public support for ocean protection.  Kip Evans is Director of Photography and Expeditions for SEA and an active participant in almost all SEA expeditions.  His eye for capturing great images, as well as, his ability to highlight the most compelling and effective messaging and storytelling, has meant his work is published worldwide.  $5 donation will go towards student research grants.

Reservation System & Restricted Access Coming to Muir Woods in 2018

$
0
0

From the creator of the Emmy® Award winning Neverwinter Nights™, a novel with a unique hero, an unlikely love story, and more twists than San Francisco’s Lombard Street.

End of an Era

The combination of neighbor complaints over traffic and the Park Service’s needs for additional funding are bringing an end to the era of “go when you want to go” for driving to Muir Woods.

.
In its place will be an Alcatraz-style reservations system where private vehicles will need a time-based reservation for one of the very few legal parking spots, and all other vehicle access comes from combined shuttle and park tickets that limit the number of people who visit Muir Woods on any given day. There is no required departure time for visitors, so all reservations are good until the end of the selected day.

It is not yet clear whether the Marin Transit Muir Woods Shuttle will continue to offer service to Muir Woods after these changes are implemented.

.
Disabled parking spots will be reserved in the same way as regular spots, but have their own waiting list so presumably they will have a shorter required lead time during the summer high season than regular spots. Seats on the Alcatraz ferries routinely sell out over a month in advance over the summer under a similar system.

The National Park Service says that they will implement the new reservations system in early 2018, and that they are looking for a private company (called a concessionaire) to operate it for them. This comes as the concessionaire contract for ferry service to Alcatraz is under review and may be awarded to a different company than Alcatraz Cruises, the current operator.

Some Walk-Ins Welcome

Unlike Alcatraz, the new Muir Woods reservation system will have some notable exceptions:

  • Visitors who come up the mountain on commercial bus tours will not need individual reservations. The Park Service may, however, limit the size and number of tour buses that arrive each day.
  • If you hike to the park you won’t need a reservation.
  • If you ride your bike to Muir Woods you won’t need a reservation.

Planned Muir Woods Fees and Ticket Prices

Parking will cost $8 per for each vehicle, and they have pre-announced that the fee will increase by 50 cents every two years. Only a tiny minority of the current vehicles that visit Muir Woods fit into its parking lots (everyone else parks illegally along the road) so if you want to drive to the park be ready for long lead times. They will sell advance reservations up to 90 days from the day that you log onto the system.

Shuttle reservations will cost $3 per person for anyone aged 16 and up, and they have pre-announced that it will go up by a quarter (25 cents) every two years. Visitors under age 16 still need a reservation (which is free), and the shuttle ride is also free. There will also be a $10 Muir Woods entrance fee for everyone 16 and up on top of the other charges.

.

The Bay Model Visitor Center is a wonderful, FREE research and education facility built and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Below are their events in September:

Bay Day

Saturday, September 30th.  10:00 AM – 2:00 PM

In preparation for the second annual Bay Day, on Saturday, October 7th, partners of the Bay Model will present various educational and recreational activities to inspire you to connect with, and protect, this beautiful natural resource that many of us call home.

Reservation System & Restricted Access Coming to Muir Woods in 2018

From the creator of the Emmy® Award winning Neverwinter Nights™, a novel with a unique hero, an unlikely love story, and more twists than San Francisco’s Lombard Street.

Muir Woods Shuttle

End of an Era

The combination of neighbor complaints over traffic in Mill Valley, pressure from Marin County to curb visitors, and the Park Service’s need for additional funding are bringing an end to the era of “go when you want to go” for going to Muir Woods.

.
In its place will be an Alcatraz-style reservations system where private vehicles will need a time-based reservation for one of the very few legal parking spots, and all other vehicle access comes from reservations that limit the number of people who visit Muir Woods on any given day. There will be no required departure time for visitors, so all reservations are good until the end of the selected day.

The net effect of the plan will be to push visitors out of private vehicles (since parking will be severely limited) and onto shuttles, tour buses etc. Shuttle riders will still need a reservation to board the shuttle and enter the park, but the number of reservations for visitors will far exceed the number of available reservations for cars.

The catch: You’ll still need to book ahead much of the year if you’re taking the shuttle, since they are forecasting that the number of reservations for 2018 will be significantly lower than the number of visitors in 2017.

It is not yet clear how the schedule for the Marin Transit Muir Woods Shuttle will be affected. This public bus service to Muir Woods currently runs from May through October, with daily service in the busiest months and weekend shuttles at other times. There is no current shuttle service from November through April.

.
Disabled parking spots will be reserved in advance in the same way as regular spots, but have their own waiting list so presumably they will have a shorter required lead time during the summer high season compared to regular parking spots. Seats on the Alcatraz ferries routinely sell out four to six weeks in advance over the summer under a similar system.

Update: The Park Service has now announced that it has selected Ace Parking Inc. to manage the reservations system.

Some Walk-Ins Welcome

Unlike Alcatraz, the new Muir Woods reservation system will have some notable exceptions:

  • Visitors who come up the mountain on commercial bus tours will not need individual reservations. The Park Service will, however, limit the size and number of tour buses that arrive each day and those visitors will count towards the maximum quota of people who can visit the park. Tour operators will pay for the tickets and coordinate the reservations of their riders.
  • If you hike into the park you won’t need a reservation. This is one of the two real loopholes, the second of which is…
  • If you ride your bike to Muir Woods you won’t need a reservation.
