Words That Made the Difference: Brown vs. Board of Education

by Dr. Cindy Acker

When: 4:30 PM on Sunday, June 12, 2022  (Note: The play is being staged on June 12 to honor Juneteenth while avoiding any conflict with the Juneteenth Festival in Marin City on June 19.) The play is one hour and 45 minutes long and will be followed by a Q&A session led by playwright and director Cindy Acker.

Where:  Dunphy Park, Sausalito (See map below) will be the site of an outdoor production of the play Words That Made the Difference: Brown vs. Board of Education, by Dr. Cindy Acker. Chairs will be available in front of the temporary stage in Dunphy Park. Lawn seating will also be available.

Cost: Free

Sponsored by: The City of Sausalito, with the Sausalito Marin City School District, Friends of the Sausalito Library, and Friends of the Marin City Library.

The Author: Dr. Cindy Acker, Ed.D. is an international racial and social justice consultant and the founder of the Montessori Elementary Intermediate School of Alameda. Among her several degrees is a doctorate in Educational Leadership from UC Berkeley. This month, she will be presented with the 2022 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award from the Alameda Chamber of Commerce. You can learn more about Words That Made the Difference by clicking here.

Why: Juneteenth is the holiday that recognizes the actual implementation of the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union forces arrived in the Gulf Coast city of Galveston, Texas, one of the last places where the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in 1863 had not yet been announced and enforced. Their arrival effectively ended the last major enclave for the enslavement of people in the United States.

Words That Made the Difference is based on actual historical events in the fight to end school segregation in the United States. The story takes place in courtrooms across the U.S. after World War II, and depicts the actual arguments in the cases that led to the Supreme Court’s historic 1954 ruling in Brown vs. Board of Education that “separate but equal” was not equal in the schools of Topeka, KS or anywhere else, and ordering school desegregation.

Ultimately President Eisenhower used the National Guard in Little Rock, Arkansas and other cities to enforce the Court’s order in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A wonderful historical novel of that time, written by an historian who grew up amid these events, is South of Little Rock, by George Rollie Adams.

The disappearance of circuses with elephants, lions and tigers (due to issues of animal cruelty) has opened the door for the return of the circuses that were popular in Europe before the time of P.T. Barnum. These centuries-old performances grew out of classic traditions like the Italian Commedia dell’arte, which mixed comedic theatre, improvisation and gymnastics.

If that sounds interesting then you’re in for a treat, because the Flynn Creek Circus is bringing a new kind of all-human big-top theater to Sausalito’s   They offer traditional European-style tightrope walkers, aerialists, jugglers and acrobats, along with very modern comedy. (Note: We’re proud that Flynn Creek, which is home-grown just north of us in Mendocino County, is a past sponsor of OurSausalito.com.)

Featuring an international cast of performers, Flynn Creek Circus calls its style ‘Inter-Active,’ fusing comedy, improvisation and amazing athletic and gymnastic skills to create a completely new kind of circus-theater. Every performance is different, taking on a unique identity as audience choices inspire the cast to execute impressive (and often ridiculous) stunts appropriate for all ages.

Critic Judy Spinelli of Spectacle Magazine wrote, “Flynn Creek displays a tantalizing instinct for balancing a show to include just the right amount of classical elements to please purists, while including original experiments that are a hallmark of the contemporary circus scene.” It’s an exciting recipe for audience fun.

The King Tides in the coming week peak at:

Sunday, July 10 at 9:13 PM (6.56 feet)

Cost: Reception is sold out. Free tickets to panel discussion are here. Exhibition is free.

The Artists: Jewels of the Playa: The Photography, Art and Fashion of Burning Man features the work of three creative visionaries, each a master of their discipline:

  • Photography by Burning Man artist and visual historian Eleanor Preger,
  • Art created by Laura Kimpton (multi-award winning Burning Man Honorarium recipient), and…
  • Fabulous Playa fashions from innovative local designer Rebecca Bruce.

If you haven’t made the trek to the Black Rock Desert in person (and then spent the following weeks removing corrosive alkaline dust from said person, your clothing and especially your vehicle) you now have a chance to experience wonderful highlights of the Burning Man event in in downtown Sausalito. And, for this version of the Jewels of the Playa, you get to skip the alkaline dust part and using two gallons of vinegar for two days of clean-up, too!

Kidding aside, there’s a reason that some of my friends pack up for the Burning Man Festival at “Black Rock City” every year and happily deal with the hassles. Amazing art installations with unique experiences. Interesting people and even more interesting fashion. And vistas that can only be created by the cooperative work of thousands of imaginative people.

“With Jewels of the Playa: the Photography, Art & Fashion of Burning Man,” the new Sausalito Center for the Arts shares and celebrates this unique experience, and does it right near the Sausalito ferry pier and the major Sausalito parking lots. And the event will give you a great introduction to this amazing new community center for Sausalito and the Bay Area.

King Tides and Deep Puddles in Sausalito Mean Trouble Jan. 17-24 2023

Continuing Rains and King Tides Jan. 17-24

Click here to see our page on Sausalito flood zones and little-known dangers to your car

It wasn’t enough that we’ve welcomed 2023 with a series of atmospheric rivers soaking Sausalito for a not-quite-biblical couple of weeks. Now the other half of our local version of fire and brimstone is arriving in the form of King Tides… and the combination of big rain and high tides produces dangerous flooding that can total cars that seemed to be parked safely.

Even without the rain, tides above the 6.5 feet level — currently expected from Jan. 19-23 bring street flooding in low-lying areas  of Sausalito, with the most dramatic spots occurring in the Marinship on Gate 5 Road (picture above). When you add in the rain all that extra water has nowhere to go at high tide, since many drains are already full of salt water. Even on moderate days you can see the tide rising into the street near the Bay in the Marinship.

The King Tides in the coming week look like this, and you can click here for an interactive version of the chart:
